It is a toponymic surname literally meaning "of Świr", in the case of Świrskis of Lis clan (House of Świrski of Lis clan [pl]) or "of Świrz", in the case of Świrskis of Szaława clan, see Svirzh Castle (House of Świrski of Szaława clan [pl]).
