Gary S. Lachman

Gary S. Lachman is an American author, international lawyer, fishing boat captain, and former Portfolio Manager for the U.S. Department of State. Formerly a resident of Istanbul, Turkey, Lachman currently resides in Palm Beach County, Florida.

Biography

Born in New York City, Lachman was raised in Scarsdale, New York, before moving to North Carolina to attend college at Duke University. Upon graduation, he continued his education at University of Denver College of Law where he received his Juris Doctor. After 8 years of practicing law in Denver Lachman moved to the Washington D.C. area where Mr. Lachman developed Lake Arbor, one of the first large-scale master planned communities in suburban D.C. and established Thoroughbred Homes. This became the inspiration for his book Sawhorse.

Mr. Lachman accepted a position with the U.S. Department of State as International Real Estate Portfolio Manager and leader of the New Embassies and Consulates group at the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations. During one negotation in one former Soviet state, he bartered a Barbie doll and Tonka truck for a crucial security setback property.

Lachman spent 2006 - 2014 practicing international law with a focus on mergers and acquisitions in Istanbul, Turkey. His time overseas and the friends he made throughout the world became the basis for his book Friendshipping. Currently, Gary Lachman is Of Counsel in Greenspoon Marder's West Palm Beach, Florida office[1] where he works as a senior real estate and M&A lawyer. His practice focuses on international mergers & acquisitions, asset protection, and real estate law.

Mr. Lachman taught at several word renowned Universities including Johns Hopkins Carey Business School[2] and Koç University in Istanbul.[3] He was a lecturer on cross cultural communication and Kuwait University and an instructor at The Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland for their American Law program[4] as well as serving as an International Real Estate Consultant to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of the Republic of Poland. Lachman was a columnist for the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review and is the author of the textbook Real Estate Investment, Development, and Law in Emerging Markets originally published by PEI Media.

Outside of the office, Mr. Lachman was an avid and nationally ranked polo player and poarticipated in tournaments throughout the United States, Mexico and South Africa. He was a member of the of the Arapahoe Hunt in Colorado and the Potomac Hunt in Maryland.

Lachman maintains solid ties to Duke University, having served on several of the Advisory Boards, including the Board of Visitors of the Duke University Medical Center, the Duke Heart Board, and the Duke Eye Center.[5] (https://www.palmbeachsymphony.org As a colon cancer survivor, thanks to the excellent care at Duke University Medical Center, Gary gives others hope and compassion with his book Beating the Alternative. He also is closely affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medical Center by serving on the Neurosurgery Advisory Board.

Gary's current passions are classical music and deep sea fishing. Gary served on the Board of Directors of Palm Beach Symphony for 9 years. He holds a USCG Merchant Mariners OUPV Captains License and runs tournament charters with Blue Devil Fishing Team (http://www.bluedevilfishing.com). He and his partners' tournament charter fishing team operates out of West Palm Beach. He is passionate about maintaining healthy pelagic fish stocks along Florida's Atlantic coast and he and his team conduct frequent ocean trash removal exercises between Delray Beach and Jupiter, Florida. Gary and his fishing team members all belong to Captains for Clean Water (http://www.captainsforcleanwatet.org ) where Gary serves on the Board of Directors.
