The 12049 / 12050 Gatiman Express is India's first bullet train that runs between Delhi and Jhansi.[3][4][5][6] It takes 4 hours 25 minutes to cover the 403 km (250 mi) journey from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Virangana Lakshmibai Jhansi Junction railway stations with an average speed of 91 km/h (57 mph).[7]
The top operating speed of the Gatiman Express is up to 160 km/h between Tughlakabad railway station to Bilochpura Agra and Bilochpura Agra to Tughlakabad railway station in reverse direction, which makes it the fastest regularly scheduled train service in India with Rani Kamalapati (Habibganj) - Hazrat Nizamuddin Vande Bharat Express and Hazrat Nizamuddin - Khajuraho Vande Bharat Express.
History
In October 2014, Indian Railways applied for a safety certificate from the Commission of Railway Safety to start the service.[8] In June 2015, the train was officially announced. The first service ran on 5 April 2016, completing its maiden journey between Nizamuddin and Agra Cantt within 100 minutes.[9][10] Due to low occupancy, Indian Railways first extended the train from Agra to Gwalior on 19 February 2018 and then to Virangana Lakshmibai junction on 1 April 2018.[11][12]
Locomotive
The Gatiman Express is regularly hauled by WAP 5 electric locomotives from the Ghaziabad Loco Shed.[citation needed]
