Imlie (transl. Tamarind) is an Indian Hindi-language television drama series that premiered on 16 November 2020 on StarPlus and streams on Disney+ Hotstar.^[1] Produced by Gul Khan under 4 Lions Films. It formerly starred Sumbul Touqeer, Gashmeer Mahajani, Mayuri Deshmukh and Fahmaan Khan as the first generation^[2] It starred Megha Chakraborty, Karan Vohra and Seerat Kapoor as the second generation.^[3][4][5] Since September 2023, it stars Adrija Roy and Sai Ketan Rao as the third generation.^[6]

Premise

Imlie is an 18-year-old ambitious villager from Pagdandiya, who goes through twists and turns of her life to reach Delhi. She comes across Aditya, a respected and senior reporter, but he proves to be unworthy of her love by getting manipulated by Malini, his ex-wife, and Imlie leaves him, and he leaves the country by telling Imlie to go to Aryan. Then, she forms a bond with Aryan, a businessman, who at first hates Aditya due to a misunderstanding, and thus blossoms their love, until their and Malini's deaths.

18 years later

Imlie and Aryan's daughter, (also named) Imlie, and Malini and Aditya's daughter, Cheeni are raised with opposite personalities. Soon, they find their lives tangled with a young DJ and musician, Atharva Rana, and thus begins a twisted love triangle. Dhairya, Atharv's step brother enters their lives as a storm, and he dies due to Cheeni and Cheeni gets jailed. Atharv and Imlie get married, until their untimely deaths by getting shot.

20 years later

In a village named Purvaiya, Imlie and Atharva's younger daughter, (also named) Imlie works as a bar singer to gather money for her dead elder sister, Kairi's son, Ashu. Agasthya, a NRI businessman comes from London to settle down with his grandmother and family where their paths meet. After marriage, Agastya falls off a cliff and dies. Surya, Agastya's identical elder twin brother, meets Imlie.

Imlie, an 18-year-old girl is from Pagdandiya of Uttar Pradesh. Her mother, Meethi had a one night stand with Dev Chaturvedi, who left her impregnated. So, the villagers came up with a rule that if a man spends a night with a girl, they must marry. Satyakam, a farmer turned rebel, who is fighting for Pagdandia's rights is Imlie's father-figure. Aditya "Adi" Kumar Tripathi is a Delhi-based reporter working in Bhaskar Times. His girlfriend is Malini Chaturvedi (Dev's daughter). Before their engagement, Adi leaves for Pagdandia to take Satyakam's interview. Imlie helps Adi in guiding the village, and end up staying together due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. The villagers find out and force Adi to marry Imlie or else they kill him. Imlie agrees to marry Adi to save his life. Imlie and Adi are forcefully married against their wills. In New Delhi, Imlie introduces herself as a maid to the Tripathi family to save Adi. Before Adi and Malini's marriage, he reveals the marriage truth to Malini, making her faint. Imlie sees her husband marrying Malini, her half-sister with a broken heart. Adi has to go to Pagdandia for the government's peace meeting with Satyakam and decides to leave her there permanently. Soon Adi realises Imlie is his true love and Malini was just a friend. He also learns that they are half-sisters during his Pagdandia visit.

Adi reveals the truth to Malini that Imlie is his first wife. Malini comes to Pagdandia with a name Kalpana and discovers that Imlie is her half-sister. Adi and Imlie reunite with Malini's help and Aditya convinces Satyakam and Meethi to get married. Imlie learns about her father and refuses to accept Dev and tells Satyakam will always be her father. Imlie finally expresses her feelings to Adi. She wants to be a reporter, after seeing Adi's work.

After some time, Malini starts feeling bitter seeing Aditya and Imlie happy. She stops the divorce proceedings and put on a fake suicide drama, Malini tries to break Aditya and Imlie's relationship. Imlie discovers Malini's intentions and warns Aditya, but he didn't believe her. Malini gets intimate with Aditya by intoxicating him. Imlie is devastated and files a case against Malini for the incident. Malini becomes pregnant. Imlie decides to let Malini stay in the house because she thinks the baby should not live a life like her without her father's name. Malini wants Imlie to leave Adi's life. The Tripathi family slowly accepts Imlie as their daughter-in-law. But Adi and Imlie's relationship is at stake due to trust issues and misunderstandings because of Malini. Finally, Adi and Malini are divorced. Malini shoots herself and frames Imlie, but Satyakam takes the blame and goes to jail. Malini demands to send Imlie out of the house. When Adi asks Imlie what happened, she loses all her patience and ends their relationship.

Aryan Singh Rathore is a businessman and the CEO of Bhaskar Times. He misunderstands that Adi is responsible for his brother-in-law, Arvind’s death, thus wanting revenge from him. The truth was, Adi was trying to know from Arvind is he mistreats his workers, just trying to get answers, and more people came in and pushed Arvind. Aditya got mad and fought for Arvind, and managed to get him in his car so he could escape. Then, someone threw a glass bottle on Arvind’s car, and they caused a fire and killed him, while Aditya tried to save him and was innocent. Arvind died in the accident and Aryan ran to the spot with Arpita and misunderstood Aditya. Although Aryan was initially rude to Imlie, he later likes her. Adi misunderstands Imlie and Aryan's relationship. Malini sends divorce papers to Adi replacing them with a letter from Imlie. Adi misunderstands Aryan and Imlie's relation and announces his marriage to Malini making Imlie sign the divorce papers. After the divorce, Aryan laid moral support to Imlie. She and Aryan shares a supreme relationship of friendship and becomes comfortable with each other. Adi goes to Pagdandiya for a really dangerous assignment, and tries to get someone’s interview. Someone mixes something in his drink and when he passes out, the dangerous man puts a bomb piece in his ears. Imlie and Aryan reach the spot and find the fraud dangerous man. Aryan shoots the man and Aditya is about to escape but the man holds his jeans and doesn’t let him go. He then sets the bomb and they both go in the blast. Everyone thinks Aditya’s dead, but Aryan and Imlie try to rescue him. The villagers try to get them married and when they escape they're about to kill them, but Aditya regains consciousness and fights back and rescues them. Aryan makes Imlie the CEO for a day as he's out sick. Aditya notices this and gets jealous as he sees how close Imlie and Aryan are, and he resigns, quitting his job. With Aryan's help Imlie finally manages to expose Malini's misdeeds. Aditya throws Malini out of the house and sends Anu to jail, releasing Satyakam. He begs Imlie to forgive him but Imlie doesn't as he ruined her trust in love. Aditya goes back to Bhaskar Times as Aryan hires him back, but making him go into the weather section temporarily. Aditya keeps on trying to ask Imlie for forgiveness. Aditya reports a stormy weather as clear, since 2 men give him the wrong information, leading to Aryan and Arpita being injured in the storm. He then learns about Arvind and Aryan's revenge and tries to warn Imlie that Aryan is using her against him, but she refuses to believe. However, when Aryan publicly confronts Aditya, Imlie learns the truth. Then he frames Aditya for false weather reporting and bans his journalism license.

Seeing the Tripathis condition, Imlie begs Aryan to save her family. He then puts forth the condition of marrying her but she in turn puts a condition that the marriage would be fake and should be on paper only. When Aditya learns about the same, he demands the wedding in front of his eyes, as a punishment of hurting Imlie. Imlie and Aryan finally, get married. After their marriage, Neela tries to break their relationship. Imlie gives a closure to Arpita and Narmada as she reveals Arvind's deaths reason. Out of guilt, Aryan lets Imlie go and realizes Aditya is innocent and befriends him. However, Aditya tells Imlie to return back to Aryan and Aditya leaves the country to go to Australia for a new job. Aparna and Rupi beg Adi to stay but he tells them he has a new job and since he lost Imlie, and Malini ruined his life, he wants to leave the country and start a new life. He leaves the country crying, thus creating one of the emotional scenes for the family. During Arpita and Sundar's wedding, Imlie discloses the dowry situation and addresses it. Narmada demands that Imlie quit her job and Aryan speaks against it. Arpita encourages Aryan to share his true feelings with Imlie as it will give her the courage to deal with Narmada's change of behaviour better. With the help of Jyo, Aryan takes Imlie on a date. Before confessing their feelings, Imlie falls from the treehouse. Aryan tries to regain Imlie's consciousness and gets scared as she does not respond to his emergency treatments which leads him to share his feelings and Imlie regains her consciousness. As it starts raining they find a secluded place where Imlie reciprocates his feelings and they spend the night there. Later, Imlie becomes pregnant.

After many turns of events, Imlie manages to expose Jyoti's misdeeds in front of Aryan with the help of Harinder-Jyoti's ex-husband, Sundar and Arpita. On their way back home, Imlie and Aryan see an abandoned baby and get her home. Malini enters as a successful Dean in a college and reveals to be holding grudges. Malini enters the Rathore mansion and reveals that Gudiya is her and Aditya's daughter who was missing. She accuses Imlie of stealing her baby. Imilie confronts Malini and she reveals that she intentionally abandoned her daughter as she has no love for her child and wants to use her to make Imilie suffer.Later,Malini manages to harm Imlie in front of Aryan's eyes. Due to that, Imlie suffers from a miscarriage. Aryan and Imlie both blame each other for their loss and part ways. Malini abandoned Gudiya in a temple and Imilie decides to take care of her and she leaves to Pagdandia. 5 years later Aryan is still grieving his baby's loss and harbours hatred toward Imlie. Imlie lives in Pagdandia with Cheeni and is shown to be fighting against social injustice as an independent journalist. Malini who happens to own significant shares of Bhaskar Times. Aryan reaches Pagdandia to solve a matter caused by Malini where he ended up saving Cheeni and learns about her. Cheeni bonds with Aryan and wishes to reunite him with Imilie and in her attempt, Cheeni makes them drink bhang and they have their wedlock.Later,Malini discovers Cheeni is the daughter she abandoned and to make Imilie suffer, she threatens Cheeni to leave Imilie and stay with her. Heartbroken, Imilie gets into an accident and ends up in a coma. 9 months later Imilie is revealed to be pregnant. She wakes up from the coma, exposes Malini and reunites with Cheeni and Aryan. Aryan and Imlie are blessed with a baby girl. While the naming baby ceremony, Malini sneaks in the house and sets a bomb. Malini trips, and she can't escape anymore and the bomb blast occurs. In the bomb blast Aryan, Imlie and Malini die. Before dying, Malini lies to Cheeni how Imlie never loved her and only kept her since she didn't have a child. Malini does this for revenge of how she thinks Imlie stole Aditya from her. Aryan and Imlie tell Sundar, Narmada, and Arpita how their baby's name will also be Imlie. Both of them die on the spot. 18 years later Imlie (Aryan and Imlie's daughter) and Cheeni (Malini and Aditya's daughter) are all grown up, with contrasting personalities. They soon cross paths with Atharv Rana (DJ Arto). Atharv falls in love with Cheeni, thinking she is the poetress. The Ranas and Rathores meet at a mutual family friend's wedding. Impressed by Imlie, the Rana family asks for Imlie's hand in marriage for Atharv against his will.

Atharv finally tells Cheeni about his feelings, and she decides to fake her love to gain his property and starts manipulating him. On the wedding day, Cheeni, who fails in her plans to marry Atharv, manipulates Atharva and makes him think that Imlie has bad intentions. To avenge Cheeni, Atharva marries Imlie in order to get Cheeni her rights. Imlie takes care of the Rana family, causing Atharva to feel guilty. Soon, Atharva learns that only Imlie writes poems secretly not Cheeni. Imlie discovers Atharva and Cheeni's truth and decides to leave but eventually stays for the sake of the Rana family. Cheeni's marriage gets fixed with Abhishek a rich business man and she rejects Atharva, in order to gain Abhishek's property. Imlie helps Atharva come over the depression.
701-800	"Cheeni's evil plans exposed by Imlie's fake memory loss. Dhairya's entry. Imlie is pregnant. Cheeni kidnaps the Rana family"
Cheeni allies herself with Anu to expel Imlie from the Rana House, by cancelling her wedding with Abhishek. Imlie discovers their plan and decides to protect Atharv from their clutches. Atharv starts to fall for Imlie. Both Imlie and Atharv in a hot air balloon, accepts each others friendship again. Later a mishap takes place and suddenly chandelier falls on Imlie. However, Atharv saves Imlie, but she loses her memory. Later, it is revealed that she is faking her memory loss only to expose Cheeni's misdeeds. She joins her hands with Rudra and Atharv, and exposes Cheeni's misdeeds in front of the family. In revenge, Cheeni kidnaps Ranas and tries to marry Atharva forcefully but, Imlie successfully saves them and Atharv fights off the goons, and gets Cheeni arrested. Atharva and Imlie express their feelings to each other and start afresh. Soon, Dhairya enters as a storm in their life, however it is proven that he is illegitimate son of Rudra due to which it causes differences between Rudra and Devika. Atharva gets into an accident caused by Cheeni and is believed to be dead. 8 months later Imlie and the Ranas are grieving the loss of Atharva . While, Imlie is pregnant. Imlie gives birth to a baby girl. But the doctor announces that the child was born dead. The Ranas also believe that the child was stillborn, but Imlie believes that her baby is alive whereas, Atharva kidnaps the baby thinking Rana's and Imlie accepted Dhairya instead of him after coming from coma .

5 years later Atharva lives with his and Imlie's daughter Karishma Rana and Cheeni. He hates Imlie thinking she loves Dhairya, whereas Imlie lives with Ranas and believes that her daughter is alive, while everyone believes the child to be dead. Devika hates Imlie, while Dhairya joins Rana's business with help of Rudra. Imlie still loves Atharva while Dhairya has feelings for her. Whereas Kairi waits for her mother accepting Cheeni as her bestfriend. Soon, everyone finds out that Atharva is alive but thinks Karishma is his and Cheeni's child. To complete the rituals and family, Devika requests Atharva and Cheeni to get married. Atharva agrees to marry Cheeni to make Imlie jealous whereas Imlie decides to marry Dhairya. On the day of marriage, Dhairya learns the truth about Kairi and about Arto's accident and decides to tell the truth to Imlie but Cheeni tries to stop him and he slips and falls of the balcony leading him to die. Imlie and Atharva join hands to find Dhairya's murderer and exposes Cheeni in front the family. After Cheeni's arrest, Devika realizes her mistake and apologizes to Imlie, whereas Atharva decides to tell the truth to Imlie, but someone messages her about Kairi in the meantime, so an angered Imlie slaps him and leaves the house with Kairi. Being a single mother she faces many problems but decides to go through it. Later, she forgives Atharva and accepts him. Imlie and Atharva get remarried and Imlie becomes pregnant again.

Anu wanting revenge fakes a homeless situation and the Ranas offer her shelter in their home. Anu snatches the Rana wealth. but they manage to acquire it back. Anu manages to kidnap Kairi and Imlie's new-born baby with the help of a few thugs. Atharv and Imlie manage to rescue their daughters, but Anu follows them with a gun so they put them in a basket in the river. Anu shoots Imlie and Atharv and they die. 20 years later Imlie and Atharva's daughter Imlie is all grown up and lives in Purvaiya with Karishma's son, Ashu. Karishma died during childbirth. Ashu is seriously ill, so to support Ashu, Imlie works as a bar singer and dreams of being a chef. Agastya Singh Chaudhary, a rich businessman, comes to Purvaiya from London to live once again with his family and handle his dead brother's businesses. Imlie's path collides with Agastya, who hates poor people. In the past, Agastya's brother committed suicide after being betrayed by a poor woman whom he loved. Later, it is revealed that Ashu is Karishma and Agastya's brother's son Dhanarj making him Agastya's nephew too. Later, Imilie enters a competition to become a chef at Chaudhary' Sweets and succeeds, but later, gets fired by Agastya. Ashu's illness gets worse and Imilie takes Agastya's offer to marry him in exchange to get money for his treatment. Agastya intends to acquire the business through the marriage thus; he and Imilie strike a deal for their own benefits. Imilie's house burns down and her family moves to the Chaudhary house. Agastya's hatred for poor people goes away as he lives with Imlie. Imlie teases Agastya about his long hair and he ends up shortening it to average hair. As more events turn out, some goons attack Agastya but a stranger named Vishwa saves them. Vishwa's brother and Agaysta's cousin Shivani want to get married. The killer abducts Chandu, an extra side helper, and the brother of Chaudhary house helps, Dolly and Jugnu. A killer tries to kill Chandu, but he survives and stays in Agastya's home for a few days. The killer, who chased Imlie and Ashu when they were young, starts stalking Imlie, and when he's about to kill Imlie, Agastya saves her. The killer killed Agastya's dad and his mom took the blame. His mom, Meera left the house and found Imlie and Kairi in a basket and took care of them. After Kairi's death along with Agastya's brother, Dhanraj, the killer came again to Meera. The killer hit Meera with the knife a couple of times and after that she ran away so Imlie could be safe. Imlie thought she died, and Agastya also thought Meera died. Both of them are unaware of the reason that Agastya's mom was the one who took care of Kairi and Imlie.It is revealed that Agastya and his family are rivals to Vishwa and his mom since they think they bought Chaudhary Sweets business from their dad and snatched away their wealth and house, thus causing his dad to die. On the day where Imlie and Agastya's marriage contract ends, Vishwa exposes them in front of the family and says he and Imlie will marry each other. Imlie agrees because Vishwa blackmails her with a video of Agastya killing a man with his car in the dark by accident, even though it was staged. The killer enters Agastya's house and abducts their house-help, Dolly, and he kills the light powers and locks all the entrances and windows. Imlie searches for Dolly while the killer locks Agastya and Vishwa in a room and tries to attack Imlie. Meanwhile, Vishwa sees a wall and knows it can be broken easily since he used to live in the mansion before they became poor. Agastya gets confused as to how he knows and they break out and shoot the killer's knife and the killer runs upstairs to the balcony and surrenders. He walks backward and in purpose slips off the balcony. The killer is turned out to be a waiter at the wedding of Vishwa's brother, Avinash, and Shivani, Agastya's cousin. Vishwa buys Chaudhary Mansion, saying Agastya's dad snatched their home from them. Imlie lets Chaudhary family stay in their house but as guests. She doesn't believe that night Agastya killed anyone and it was staged, so she anonymously helps Agastya get his house back. Agastya arranges Imlie and Vishwa's marriage as an excuse to find out and catch the killer for Imlie, as he wants to protect her. He asks Jugnu, Dolly's brother and their family house help to watch the monitors to see if the killer comes, and the killer came in front of the camera startling Jugnu. He runs downstairs to inform Agastya. The killer abducts Imlie, and she faints and Agastya brings her back to the house. Agastya suspects Vishwa is spying on Imilie and he proves it to the whole family. Imlie tries to trick Vishwa into bringing her to the man who is alive, even though Vishwa lied he is dead because Agastya ran him over. When they reach the place, the killer tries to kill Vishwa and Vishwa takes a picture of him. It is turned out to be Agastya and during Imlie and Vishwa's wedding, Agastya puts a gas in the house, making everyone faint. He also fake kills a man for Imlie to come out. He comes as the killer, and kidnaps Imlie in front of Vishwa. Turns out, everything was staged and how Imlie and Agastya planned all this to trick Vishwa, and Agastya is innocent. They expose Vishwa and Vishwa threatens to get revenge on Imlie. Shivani moves into the outhouse where Vishwa and Navya live, and Agastya is unhappy. Agastya's mom who is alive, Meera, calls Sonali to come to Vishwa's dad's old sweets factory. Karan, Bulbul, and Sonali reach there. Karan climbs the tall gate and they break the lock, and then when they're in the factory, a net falls on them, trapping them. Someone also locks the door. Agastya goes to the outhouse with Imlie only to find out Shivani is missing and Vishwa isn't home. Shivani returns as she says she went to her friends house. Meera calls Sonali and tells her to come to the old sweets factory of Vishwa's dad. Sonali, Karan, and Bulbul go and get trapped by a blind man while him and his son hold them hostage. Imlie finds out how Meera is alive and she's Agastya's mom and the person who adopted her and took care of her. While Agastya is about to propose to Imlie, Alka comes and exposes Meera that how she's Agastya's mom. They all get shocked. Meera leaves the house, and Agastya announces he wants to get married to Imlie. The killer comes, and Agastya tries to fight them off, but as he is about to, the killer attacks Imlie, and she is admitted to the hospital and Vishwa provides blood for her. Vishwa takes her to a secret place. Agastya fights Vishwa and jumps off the roof on a truck with Imlie, saving her. Vishwa learns that Kairi was Dhanraj's wife, and gives the photo to Ashu telling him to show it to everyone so everyone can stop the wedding. They decide to get married, and Agastya brings Ashu from the hostel to Chaudhary Mansion. The picture gets exposed and Annapurna says how Kairi was a greedy woman who trapped Dhanraj. Imlie takes Kairi's side and leaves the house in anger. Annapurna falls off the stairs blaming it on Imlie. She tells Agastya to marry another woman and Agastya agreees even though he still wants Imlie and is making sure she is safe. He agrees to marry Binni, a teacher. Imlie gets heartbroken. Meanwhile, it is revealed that the killer is a person named Bhola. He can't speak and thinks Agastya and his family are responsible for Vishwa's factory blowing up and his dad died since he was an employee. He and Navya are together and plan to kill Imlie and Agastya at Agastya's wedding. Agastya fake marries Binni and Bhola kidnaps Ashu following Navya's orders. Agastya and Imlie reach the place, and Agastya beats up the goons. They run away until the killers go away so they can rescue Ashu. Ashu gets scared and screams, and when they come out, the killers smack their heads with a stick and they faint. Meanwhile, Vishwa finds a tape revealing Navya's evilness. He breaks down crying. Navya reveals how she was the one who set the blast in their factory, union there was still people working in there. She was also the one who killed Kunal, and the blame went on Meera. She also caused Dhanraj and Kairi's accident. Just as she is about to set the place on fire, Vishwa reaches the spot with Sonali and Amar. He and Agastya fights and runs away, but one of the killers is about to stab Agastya and Imlie, but Vishwa pushes them and saves them, as the killer stabs him. Imlie shoots Bhola, and Vishwa dies on the spot, telling Agastya to take care of Imlie. Agastya and Imlie go to the temple and get married. A man comes beneath their car with a tool, breaking their car's brakes. Agastya and Imlie drive, and Agastya can't stop the brakes so they jump out of the car and roll down a cliff. They hold onto a branch. Agastya and Imlie cry while Agastya helps Imlie go to the ground, and while Imlie finds for help, Agastya falls down as the branch breaks, falling down the cliff. The family reaches the spot, while the police reveal they found a dead body, and Agastya's lifeless arm with his wedding shirt could be seen. They remove the cover and see Agastya's dead body. Annapurna ousts Imlie from the house and Imlie learns Binni is evil. Surya Pratap Reddy, an inspector who is Agastya's look alike stops a robbery. Imlie faces obstacles while trying to get the person who causes Agastya's person in jail. Surya beats up a man and manages him to reveal about Agastya's death case. 2 evil men chase Shivani as she calls them disrespectful since they tries to rob her. They reach the home and Imlie and Sonali are home, so they try to rescue Shivani. One of the men strangles Imlie, leading Shivani to hit him with a stick. The man trips and falls off the near balcony, and his partner steals his valuable stuff and kills him, and Shivani picks up the knife getting shocked to see him dead. They bury him in the property. Raghu, the evil man turns out to be Surya's brother-in-law. Surya manages to find Imlie's house so he can find out who the culprit was. Imlie sees him and faints thinking it's Agastya, and wakes up to think it was a dream. She sees Surya the next day and realizes it's Agastya's look alike. Turns out, Surya is adopted. Imlie's friends tell her that the Chaudhary family is not doing well, as Annapurna's health is getting worse after Agastya's death, Sonali got a leg fracture from a car accident, Govind and Karan are struggling with the business, and how Shivani is worried about the incident and Avinash is trying to make her feel better, and that they are going to sell the house to gain money. Surya tells Imlie he will snatch everything that was Agastya including his business, lifestyle, and family including Imlie. He wants to get revenge as he mistakes Raghu's death was because of Imlie and Chaudhary family. Imlie gets a house help disguise as Paro, since Dolly quit the job and left. She tries to stop the house getting sold. The family cries leaving the house and memories of Agastya and the family. Surya buys the house, and the family sees the face and realizes it's Surya, Agastya's look-alike. Annapurna faints, and Surya says they can stay in the house until their family arrives and Annapurna gets better, and she says how Surya has a good heart like Agastya too. Shivani gets a nightmare about Raghu and wakes up to go to the kitchen. She meets Surya, while Surya acts like a brother as Agastya would to Shivani, and tries to make Shivani reveal the truth. Sonali and Imlie reach the spot and save Shivani from telling the truth. Turns out, Imlie told Sonali everything. The next day, Surya makes lemonade and serves it to the family. While Imlie is upstairs, he annoys her and tells her the lemonade has poison. Imlie runs downstairs, and exposes her cover as Surya tricked her. He also reveals that the Chaudhary's will be staying with them since he made one portion of the house his property and the other portions of the house belong to them as he changed the documents. Imlie decides to leave Purvaiya as she thinks Surya will stop trying to harm the Chaudhary's if she leaves. Surya doesn't let Imlie leave and makes her a cleaner at Chaudhary Mansion. Sonali and Amar find out from a nurse that Surya is Agastya's elder twin brother. Turns out, Alka knew about this and Kunal never wanted a daughter. Alka thought she and Sonali would get disowned, and unaware there was 2 babies, she took one baby and dumped him on the roads, and later a man picked him up and made him part of his family and loved him. Surya goes on a mission to find out about a case where a man is suspected and is missing. Imlie sneaks in his car and goes with him and his police partner. They go to the group and try to get information. They get the address of the evil person who ran away. The evil men see Imlie is giving the address to Surya and reach Chaudhary Mansion and try to kidnap Malti. Imlie comes in the room and sees Malti getting kidnapped, and when she attacks the men their gun shoots the ceiling. Surya hears this and runs upstairs and while he is the men make Malti fall on the dresser and her head is bleeding. Surya breaks the locked door and beats the men up and they jump out of the window. The next day he calls Monty, Raghu's friend and Surya doesn't know he killed Raghu. Shivani panics on seeing Monty as he tried to kidnap her, and Surya pretends to care for her and eventually out of pressure Imlie reveals the truth. Turns out, someone dug the body out, and hid it someone else. Imlie surrenders, and eventually gets let out. Then, at Chaudhary Mansion, Amrit sneaks in and pits a slideshow, showing Amar and Sonali, and everyone passes comments. Imlie and Surya save Sonali, and Amrit gets a bottle and is about to kill Imlie, but Surya saves her. Amrit also tries to reveal Binni’s truth, and how she stays with the Chaudharys so her baby could get a name. Imlie saves Binni and kicks out Amrit. Binni then feels sorry for being mean to Imlie, and reveals how Monty killed Raghu as she knew about it. The next day, Imlie arrives at Monty’s house and sees he’s been murdered by Raghu, who is still alive. He wasn’t dead and managed to get out of his burying spot. Surya arrives at the spot and Raghu takes off out of the house. Surya is about to arrest Imlie, but Malti gets hit by a car. The next day again, Imlie is riding her bike and Surya gets Imlie’s phone, and sees a video Imlie recorded showing Raghu alive and he runs to save her. Raghu rams his car into Imlie, and Imlie runs into the woods and Raghu catches up and is about to kill her, but Surya saves her. Raghu is about to kill Surya since he went against him, but Imlie takes the shot and Surya beats up Raghu and gets him arrested. Annapurna thinks Surya and Imlie getting married will be good, and tells Surya if he feels even a little bad for doubting Imlie, then to marry her and to give her a reason to live. Imlie also gets forced by Annapurna as she doesn’t eat until they get married. On the day of the marriage, Surya’s constable, Chowpatty finds Agastya’s phone at the cliff, and they both find a video which shows Agastya on his marriage and death day saying in the video about when he went to the hospital, he found out Surya was his twin, and he says he can’t wait to meet Surya, and introduces Imlie and the Chaudhary family, but due to network issues, the video couldn’t reach Surya. He and Imlie get married. Malti calls her aunts and uncle - Indira, Mahesh and Hemlata - so they can convince Surya not to get married. However, Surya does marry Imlie and for Imlie's better life, and the Chaudhary’s give the house to Surya and Imlie and leave Purvaiya. Surya tells Imlie she could have a good future if she tries. Imlie and Indira have issues and then Surya’s ex-girlfriend Anjali comes to realize Surya betrayed her, and Malti tries to help her get Surya back. Imlie also overhears that Surya was the reason Agastya dies, and throws a fit at him and hits him many times and leaves the house. She eventually reaches a place with her bike and sleeps on the ground. Next day in the morning, Imlie wakes up to see Jugnu and after Agastya’s death, then they leaving Purvaiya, he had an emotional breakdown since he didn’t have Agastya and Imlie anymore and it was like before. So, Sonali told Jugnu to start a new life and he works as a cook in a small area. Surya picks up Imlie from the place, and even confesses that he killed Agastya in a recording and suspends himself from an officer. Raghu gets bailed from Malti and he is about to shoot Imlie but Surya sees this and runs and takes the shot. Luckily, he gets fine as Imlie donated blood for him. Surya’s grandpa and cousin, Arjun(it is from the Reddys, not his blood family). Surya goes to Anjali’s house as his mother phones him, and Anjali puts something in his juice making him dizzy. He gets home and gives food to Imlie as he find out she didn’t eat, and Malti and Nirmala lock the rooms and Imlie notices Surya is dizzy and weird, and she feels unsafe. Surya gets offended as she thinks bad about him, and jumps out of the window and gets a fracture. Then, Nirmala puts Imlie’s photos in Surya’s clothes while she is washing it, and she sees is and then again thinks Surya is bad. Surya is about to go out and trips on a bucket and land on Imlie and hold her for support. Imlie misunderstands him and slaps him. Arjun sees this and explains to Imlie that Surya is good.

Production

Development

Star Jalsha's Bengali series Ishti Kutum was remade in Hindi language on StarPlus as Mohi by White Horse Productions which aired from 2015 to 2016 which did not garner good viewership.^[7][8] However, by 4 Lions Films, producer Gul Khan remade the series again as Imlie for StarPlus stating, "I know you have heard and seen this before, many times, but we'll play it more real".^[9] The first promo of the series was released on 27 October 2020 and featured the leads.

Casting

Gashmeer Mahajani, playing the lead role of Aditya Kumar Tripathi decided to quit the show in January 2022. He said "My exit was planned two months back. The reasons for the same are best known to me and Gul Khan and I think to maintain our professional integrity, it should remain between only the two of us. It was a two-month long process in which I had to give it the time to stabilize with a new fresh track and gradually reduce my screen space so that once I exit the show, it can still run on its own merit and not get hampered. For the show to run and the new track to sustain after my exit, Aditya has to be completely wrong for Imlie if Aryan has to be completely right. These are basic scripting rules. If I was writing this script, I would have done it the same way. So in the last one and a half month when the decision of my exit was finally made, that is when they made changes in my character and I was okay with it completely. One shouldn't forget that the show-runner is Imlie and she is Sumbul Touqeer. The show runs on her shoulders. "

Manasvi Vashist replaced Mahajani as Aditya but he also quit the show after few months only as he didn't want to be playing a grey role. Sumbul Touqeer who played Imlie, Fahmaan Khan who played Aryan and Mayuri Deshmukh who played Malini, quit the show post generation leap in September 2022.^[10][11]

Megha Chakraborty was cast as Imlie, the female lead post generation leap and Seerat Kapoor was cast as the negative lead, Cheeni. Karan Vohra was cast as the male lead, Atharva.^[12][3] On her entrance Chakraborty said, "Imlie has become a huge part of my life already, and I hope the audience will enjoy this new beginning."^[13]

In September 2023, Adrija Roy was cast as female lead Imlie, for the third generation and Sai Ketan Rao was cast as playing dual roles, Agasthya after his death track and Surya, the new male lead.^[14]

Filming

The filming of the series began in October 2020.^[15] Although the series is set in New Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, it was filmed at sets in Mumbai.^[16]

On 14 April 2021, due to the sudden strict COVID regulations set in by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, shooting of all serials were asked to halt. Imlie Team moved Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad and conducted their shoot there till the next notice.^[17]

Television special

Ravivaar With Star Parivaar (2022)

The cast of Imlie participated in Ravivaar With Star Parivaar, a musical competition wherein eight StarPlus shows competed against each other to win the title of "Best Parivaar".^[18][19] Imlie emerged as the first runner-up of the show^[20] and Sumbul Touqeer aka Imlie won the player of the series award as she was declared as the best performer, most stylish and screened sadasya of the show. She won a brand new car as a prize.^[21]

Adaptations

Imlie is an official adaptation of Ishti Kutum. The story of Imlie was originally based on Ishti Kutum till 250 episodes.^[2] The second generation story was adapted from the series Milon Tithi.^[5] The third generation story has resemblance with Star Jalsha's newly launched show Love Biye Aaj Kal.^[22]
