Massachusetts Open
The Massachusetts Open is the Massachusetts state open golf tournament, open to both amateur and professional golfers. It is organized by Mass Golf, a non-profit organization based in Norton, Massachusetts.[1]
History
The early years of the tournament were dominated by the brothers Donald Ross and Alex Ross. Donald Ross won the first tournament, held at Vesper Country Club, defeating amateur Arthur G. Lockwood by a shot.[2] His brother Alex won the next three events.[3][4] However, in 1909 Donald Ross shot an opening round 71 to take the lead. He lead by four over his brother who was in fourth place.[5] In the second round, Alex shot a 71 to move up the leaderboard but Ross maintained the lead with a 72.[6] Entering the final round Ross had a four stroke lead over his brother. However, he had several high scores early and lost the lead to Alex by the 4th hole. Alex had a two-stroke lead entering the 72nd hole but there were "visions of a tie and play-off when [he] got into trouble at the home hole." However, he managed to score a 5 to defeat his brother by one.[7] Alex Ross was the "favorite" the following year and took a four stroke lead entering the final round.[8] However, in the final round the amateur J.G. Anderson scored an "extraordinary" 34 on the front nine to take the lead. However, Ross "passed him" on the back nine and won by three.[9] In 1911, the championship was held at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. In preparation for the event, the Boston Evening Transcript deemed Alex Ross the favorite again.[10] Down the stretch, Donald Ross, Mike Brady, and Alex Ross were "closely bunched" together. The 14th and 15th holes were the deciding holes. On the 14th, Brady made bogey and followed it up with his only three-putt of the tournament. He finished two back. According to the Transcript, "The same holes that cost Brady his chance for the title did the same for Alex Ross," as he also played poorly on the 14th and 15th holes. Donald Ross's "prospects looked bad" on the 15th too but he made a "grand recovery" to save bogey. Ross then finished 3-4-3 to defeat Brady by two. It was considered an especially "remarkable victory" because Ross was working full-time as a golf course designer and had yet to play golf at all the entire year.[11] Donald Ross elected not to defend his championship the following year though.[12] At the 1912 event, held at Oakley Country Club, Alex was the wire-to-wire leader and was victorious for the sixth time.[13]
It has been played annually since 1905 (except for war years and 2020) at a variety of courses around the state. It was considered a PGA Tour event from 1916 to 1937. Past winners include World Golf Hall of Fame players Donald Ross, Walter Hagen, Leo Diegel, Francis Ouimet, Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson, Horton Smith, and Julius Boros.
In 2008 and 2009, two future PGA Tour players won the event. Jim Renner won the event in 2008 at Stockbridge Golf Club and Rob Oppenheim won the event in 2009 at Belmont Country Club.
