Military unit
The Royal Naval War College was a training establishment for senior officers of the Royal Navy that existed from 1900 to 1914. It was based originally at Greenwich, then Plymouth, then Portsmouth, and then Greenwich again. Branch colleges were also based at Chatham and Plymouth prior to the First World War.
Early history
A "War Course for Captains and Commanders" was inaugurated at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich in November 1900.[1] The course moved to Devonport in 1905 and to Portsmouth in 1906, being officially named the Royal Naval War College in 1907.[2] It catered for flag officers, captains and commanders. Courses included training in tactical naval war games, strategic naval war games, studying and writing reports on various problems and lectures on various subjects.[3] The college's functions were to have been returned to Greenwich in 1914.[2]
