On 15 March 2024 at 15:00 Eastern European Time, a polling center that was being used for voting in the 2024 Russian presidential election was bombed in Skadovsk, in the Russian-occupied part of Kherson Oblast in Ukraine. Ukrainian partisans claimed responsibility for the attack .[1]
Background
Russia has occupied Skadovsk since March 2022.[2] Within minutes after Russian forces entered the city, residents of the city came out to a rally with Ukrainian flags and called on Russian forces to get out and leave the city.[3] After Russia annexed occupied Ukrainian regions in September 2022, plans were set up by Russian authorities to hold elections in the occupied regions.[4][5] The British Government stated that they will not recognize pseudo-elections in the occupied territories.[6]
Bombing
The explosion occurred at 15:00 local time on Skadovsk's central square near the polling station while Russian soldiers were patrolling nearby. The explosion was first reported by an advisor to the mayor of Mariupol, Petro Andriushchenko on his Telegram account.[7]
Aftermath
Five Russian soldiers who were patrolling the area at the time of the bombing were wounded.[8] The Russian occupation administration later announced that they were going to cancel further elections in the city but allow voting at a place of residence.[9] The National Resistance Center of Ukraine stated that: "none of those responsible for organizing the elections will escape responsibility".[10]
