Syria

Ukraine

Syria and Ukraine have currently severed bilateral foreign relations. Relations existed from 1992 to 2022, when they were severed. The Ukrainian embassy in Lebanon protects Ukrainian interests in Syria.[1]

History

Syria recognized the independence of Ukraine on December 28, 1991. The countries established diplomatic relations on March 31, 1992.[citation needed]

With the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Syria became politically closer to the Russian Federation. Citing human rights violations by the government of Bashar al-Assad against Syrian civilians, Ukraine closed its embassy in Damascus in 2016, and in 2018 ordered the closure of the Syrian embassy in Kyiv.[1]

On June 29, 2022, Syria recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics,[2] after which on June 30, 2022, Ukraine severed relations with Syria.[1] Syria formally broke its diplomatic ties to Ukraine on July 20, citing the principle of reciprocity.[3]
