Tistory is a South Korean blog-publishing service that allows private or multi-user blogs.

It was first started by 'Tatter and Company', a blogging platform developing company that developed the software 'Tattertools', with Daum Communications, the major web portal in South Korea in 2006.[1][2] In July 2007, all rights to manage the services were taken over into Daum.

In 2022, Tistory was ranked as the most visited website in South Korea that is not a search engine.[3]

Behind The Name

Tistory is a compound word of T, the initial letter of Tattertools, and History. This name was created through the unity of the initial planning members, and was chosen to create a service-type blog containing personal history based on Tattertools.

Features

  • Convenience: Tistory is an installation blog program called Tattertools that has been moved to a service blog. We set up the server ourselves, imported Tattertools' source code almost as is, targeting general users who had difficulty adapting to Apache web server, MySQL, PHP, etc., and started services like Naver Blog and Daum Blog.
  • Subscription type: Tistory uses WYSIWYG (a function that converts what appears on the screen into HTML, also known as WYSIWYG ), so you can use features such as posts, comments, and related posts (trackbacks) even if you do not know how to handle HTML. Therefore, there is also the aspect of a subscription blog.
  • Installation type: Unlike other blog services, Tistory allows the use of HTML editing, referrer logs, and visitor records, making it popular among those who are tired of the less free Naver or Daum blogs or advanced users who know how to handle HTML programming. It is possible to create external programs such as skins and plug-ins previously provided by Tattertools. However, for performance reasons, plug-in functions cannot be freely added/edited by users, and service operators selectively install and link them.
  • Invitation: In the case of Tistory, unlike other blog services, it is operated by an invitation system where the existing blog operator invites new people, and the competition to obtain these invitations is very fierce. Invitations are sent via email with a sign-up link. This is a method, and once you sign up, invitations are issued based on the performance of posts, number of visitors, and number of comments, and you can invite new people. However, in the second half of 2018, the invitation was abolished after 12 years.
