Virje is a village and a municipality in the Koprivnica–Križevci County in Croatia.

Population

In the 2011 census, there were 4,587 inhabitants in the area, in the following settlements:[3]

  • Donje Zdjelice, population 74
  • Hampovica, population 268
  • Miholjanec, population 295
  • Rakitnica, population 136
  • Šemovci, population 512
  • Virje, population 3,302

In the same census, Croats formed an absolute majority.[4]

History

St. Martin of Tours is the patron saint of this municipality.

In the late 19th century and early 20th century, Virje was part of the Bjelovar-Križevci County of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia.
