Wang Shunyou (Chinese: 王顺友; November 1965 – 30 May 2021) was a Chinese postal worker and politician. An ethnic Miao from Muli County in Sichuan Province. He worked for decades as a rural mail carrier for the Muli Tibetan Autonomous County Post Office. He was a member of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)and served as a delegate to the 18th National Congress of the CCP in 2012 .

Biography

Since 1985, Wang Shunyou worked as a rural mail carrier for the Muli Tibetan Autonomous County Post Office in Sichuan Province. He was responsible for delivering mail between Muli County and the townships of Baidiao, Sanjueya, Luobo, and Kala Township. Each year, he worked over 330 days, traveling alone on horseback along the Ma Ban mail route, which covered a round-trip distance of 584 kilometers.[1] Every year, nearly ten thousand pieces of various mail are delivered. There has never been a delay in a single shift, and no mail has been lost.[2]

In 2007, Wang was elected as a delegate to the 9th Sichuan Provincial Congress of the Chinese Communist Party.[3] Later, in 2012, he was elected as a delegate to the 18th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party.[4]

Death

On May 30, 2021, Wang Shunyou died suddenly from illness in Muli County at the age of 56.[5]

Awards and honors

Wang Shunyou was widely recognized for his decades of service as a rural postal worker. In 2001, he was named a Model Worker by the Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and was awarded the National May 1 Labor Medal by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions.[2] In April 2005, the Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party recognized him as an Outstanding Member, and the State Post Bureau honoured him as a National Model Postal Worker. Later that year, on October 19, Wang became the first grassroots postal worker invited to the Universal Postal Unionheadquarters since its founding in 1874.[6] In 2006, he was named a National Outstanding Communist Party Member. In 2009, he was selected as one of the “100 People Who Moved China” in a nationwide recognition campaign. He was named a National Moral Model in 2018.[7] He was included in the 2019 list of “Most Beautiful Strivers” to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

In July 2006, Wang Shunyou’s life story was adapted into the film The Messenger of Shangri-La (《香巴拉信使》). The film starred Qiu Lin as Wang Shunyou and Ermayina as the female lead.[8]
