El Premio Hugo al mejor libro de no ficción puede ser otorgado a una obra relacionada con la ciencia ficción, la fantasía o el fandom, siempre que no reúna los requisitos para ninguna de las categorías de ficción. Entre el tipo de obras elegibles se hallan los cómics y novelas gráficas, recopilaciones artísticas, trabajos de crítica literaria, libros sobre la realización de películas o series de televisión, biografías, etc.

Retro Hugos
A partir de la Worldcon de 1996, la Sociedad Mundial de Ciencia Ficción creó el concepto de "Retro Hugos", en el que el premio Hugo podría otorgarse retroactivamente durante 50, 75 o 100 años antes. Los Retro Hugos solo pueden ser otorgados durante los años en los que se realizó una Worldcon, aunque inicialmente no se otorgaron premios.[44] Para esta categoría, se han entregado sólo dos veces: en 2004 y 2020; para el resto de años, no estuvo en la papeleta de votantes o se declaró decierto debido a la insuficiencia de votantes.[35][37][39][40]
