Jane Goodall

Dame Jane Morris Goodall DBE (/ˈɡʊdɔːl/; lahir Valerie Jane Morris-Goodall pada 3 April 1934),^[3] sebelumnya bernama Baroness Jane van Lawick-Goodall, adalah primatolog dan antropolog Inggris.^[4] Ia diakui sebagai peneliti simpanse terbaik di dunia. Ia dikenal karena mendalami interaksi sosial dan keluarga simpanse liar selama 55 tahun sejak terjun ke Taman Nasional Sungai Gombe di Tanzania tahun 1960.^[5]

Perjalanan Goodall ke Kenya pada tahun 1957 membawanya menjadi seorang peneliti simpanse yang terkenal di dunia hingga saat ini. Penelitiannya yang mendalam pada kehidupan kelompok simpanse di hutan Gombe membuatnya menemukan beberapa fakta baru dari simpanse yang memiliki kekerabatan genetik unik dengan manusia. Pada Oktober 1960 Goodall menemukan bahwa simpanse yang sebelumnya dikenal adalah pemakan tumbuhan ternyata juga pemakan daging. Pada November 1960 ia juga meneliti tentang simpanse yang membuat dan menggunakan peralatan dalam kehidupan mereka. Penemuan ini dinilai sebagai salah satu penemuan terbesar dalam bidang pendidikan di abad kedua puluh.^[6]

Perempuan yang memiliki nama asli Valerie Jane Morris-Goodall ini kemudian mendirikan Jane Goodall Institute pada tahun 1977. Organisasi ini didirikan untuk mendukung kecintaan Goodall pada primata dengan melakukan penelitian di Gombe untuk meningkatkan perlindungan terhadap simpanse. Saat ini Dr. Jane Goodall ^[7] berkeliling dunia, menulis, berbicara dan menyebarkan visi misinya ke seluruh dunia. Menebarkan semangatnya bagi setiap orang untuk “use the gift of our life to make the world a better place." Sebagai seorang pecinta alam, peduli kemanusiaan, dan pejuang hewan ia juga adalah utusan PBB untuk perdamaian.
