David Harvey på Commons

David Harvey (født 31. oktober 1935 i Gillingham i Kent i England) er en marxistisk orientert geograf.

Liv og verk

David Harvey begynte sin akademiske karriere ved University of Cambridge der han tok doktorgraden (Ph.D) i 1961. I 1960 - 61 var han postdoktor ved Uppsala universitet. Etter å ha jobbet ved universitetet i Bristol kom han 1969 til Johns Hopkins University i Baltimore USA.

Hans The Limits to Capital 1982, som Harvey selv anser som sitt hovedverk, er det mest siterte marxistiske arbeide innenfor geografisk vitenskap. Ved slutten av 1980-tallet vendte Harvey tilbake til England som professor i Oxford, hvor han 1989 publiserte The condition of Postmodernity, en materialistisk kritikk av postmodernismens ideer.

A Brief History of Neoliberalism (2005) gir en historisk gjennomgang av nyliberal teori og praksis siden midten av 1970-tallet. Hans seneste verk The Enigma of Capital (2010) søker å forstå den samtidige økonomiske krisen. Harvey vendte i 1993 tilbake til USA, der han er professor ved City University of New York og har forfattet mange bøker. Hans forelesninger om Kapitalen på nettet hadde mer enn 700.000 besøk mellom juni 2008 og mars 2010.
