History

The area in what is known as New Colony today was first settled in the late 1880s by people from South Carolina. The wife of J.T. Latham decided to name it New Colony since it was their new home. A local Baptist church was founded in 1889 and several families surnamed Carwile, Elgins, Washington, Crowson, and Martin helped to charter it. Zachariah H. Carwile donated land for another church in 1904. Four years later, it was destroyed by a tornado, but it was rebuilt within a year. A cemetery was located behind the church, and Carwile's grave is the oldest dating back to his death in 1917. It had several homes and businesses in the 1930s. Throughout the 20th century, New Colony was a farming community. It had 65 residents and a woodworking shop as the only business in 2000.[2]
